Promoting SAQA ~ Educating the Public

 Attracting New Members

This past spring, during my local quilt guilds bi-annual show, I was given the opportunity to have a booth space for SAQA. I got to chat with lots of folks and educate the public about SAQA and Art Quilts in general, and even picked up a few new members. SAQA publications, brochures, and art quilts were part of the display.  This is a good way to support the membership drive. Please consider doing this if there is an opportunity in your area.Please contact me if you are interested.

Quilts bySusan Balch, Judy Cohen, Lynne Croswell, and Paulette Martel.
Thanks so much for loaning pieces for the display.

Please let me know about ways you have promoted SAQA or have any ideas about how you or others might be able to contribute to this effort.

The Winter Warmth Project

Make a quilt and keep a Vermonter warm this winter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Winter Warmth Project Update
Your generosity has made it possible for the Winter Warmth Project to give away more than 700 quilts since September 28, 2011. There are 50 quilts currently spoken for and somewhere in the process of being pieced or being quilted. We have received quilts from as far away as Alaska and as close as next door. We have been hard-pressed to use all the fabric which you have donated, but we continue to work on it and the piles are going down! The number of you who have sewn kits or quilted for the project is commendable. Thank you all for stepping up to the plate!
NEW DONATIONS: At this point we can only accept QUEEN tops or QUEEN quilts. We will accept and can use cash donations. Any monies which we receive from you will be used to offset the cost of batting and backing.
Donations may be sent to Winter Warmth Project, 108 Vine St., Northfield, VT 05663. If sending money please make your check out to: Winter Warmth Project.
We have decided to continue the project until August 28, 2012...the one year anniversary of the storm. There will be an update close to that date. In the meantime, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You all for your gifts of love, kindness, care and warmth to the people of Vermont.              ~ Pam Druhen for the Winter Warmth Project
Donations can be sent to:
Surface Design Blowout Weekend in Thetford, VT
Margaret mono-printing at a past Blowout weekend
Hi Everyone,
The weather is cooperating! It's going to be perfect (sunny & 70's weather) ! The annual Free Surface Design Blowout weekend is happening this weekend, June 9th & 10th at 1239 Academy Road in Thetford, VT. I already know we will have 15 people participating and at least 5 "stop by and watch for a bit" walk throughs. I hope you will be able to join  us for one day or both.
What to bring:
A 10 x 10 tent if you have one
A table and chair for your work.
Your surface design supplies
A cooler with drinks, snacks and sandwich.
A great sense of humor and sense of camradery
Saturday Evening: It would be great if you could shoot me an email if you want to come back to my house for a take out dinner and gathering.  I need to know so I will look for you at the Blowout weekend and give you directions to my house from there. msartquilts@gmail.com
Overflow parking at the Blowout may be an issue, so if you can carpool with friends, that would be great.  We are focussing on the parking situation, so there may be a need to unload first, then move you car to another location before setting up.  We will direct you when you arrive.
Emers/Leavitt Exhibit
 “Assemblage and Sculpture by Ruth Emers/Collage and Quilts by Michele Leavitt”
June 10 - 29, 2012
Providence Art Club
11 Thomas Street
Providence RI
phone: 401-331-1114
http://www.providenceartclub.org/
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 12 to 4 pm and weekends 2 to 4 pm.
Opening reception: June 10, 2012, 2 to 4 pm
Sculptor Ruth Emers and quilter and collage artist Michele Leavitt met for the first time at the Providence Art Club.  Both artists repurpose discarded items, Emers in her assemblages and Leavitt in her collages and quilts.  Leavitt was enthused by her conversation with Emers and suggested they exhibit their work together.
“When Ruth said she creates assemblages,” Leavitt says, “I thought they would go well with the textiles and collages I create.  After all – we are both creating primarily from found objects - putting things together in new ways to give them new life and new meaning.”
