Review of the Bhakti Ziek Lecture

I was able to attend the Bhakti Ziek lecture held at the League of NH Craftsmen yesterday and found it wonderfully interesting.  I had never met Bhakti, nor did I know her story, so I was open to the adventure of learning all about her.

She started the evening by greeting all ten of the guests personally as we milled around the crafts studies room looking at her gorgeous weavings.  The crafts studies room at the Hanover League is an intimate setting for a lecture so the initial greeting by the lecturer put everyone at ease right away.
Her talk covered her passion and pursuit of weaving, which was initiated as a child while walking through the Natural History museum in New York with her mother.  She included several images of her travels to Central America and India in pursuit of knowledge and experience in traditional weaving methods.  Her acceptance to Cranbrook Academy, where she got her Masters Degree, gave her a more focused direction for her art and launched her as a passionate teacher. Her work has amazingly evolved over the years influenced by the electronic evolution of the loom.  She has been a pioneer in the computer graphic influence in the field of weaving.  Her work shows incredible depth of field as she plays with the layering of textures juxtaposed by the shimmer of the materials and colors she chooses to use.
I was very impressed with her use of photoshop in her work.  She gave us a brief overview on how she manipulates images for her projects.  It was very cool!

She will be teaching Photoshop As A Design Tool For Fiber Or Other Medium at the league.  If you are curious about creating art using a computer and primarily photoshop, I highly recommend you check her class out.  She will provide a comfortable and creative introduction and send you home with inspiration for expanding your work.
